2025
15th Annual Lemon Project
Conference Presentation:

The Evolving History of
Virginia's Central State Hospital
1869 - 2025

Friends' Board members participated in an hour-long panel discussion on the first day of the conference that described the history of the hospital from 1868 through the 1980s. Adrienne Fikes gave an overview about the genealogical value of information available in the hospital for families to help complete their searches, while Olivia Garland shared her experiences as the first African American director of the hospital and the role and mission of Friends. Ronald Forbes gave a compelling overview of the contributions by former physicians who practiced at Central State and King Davis shared slides on the evolution of the hospital and data on its 54,000 persons admitted from 1868-1970. The Friends also provided an exhibition of 25 posters, storyboards, and memorabilia in the foyer of the School. Several members travelled to the School the day prior to the conference to set up the exhibition with assistance from library staff.
